Hellish fires devour thousands of hectares: Wildfires sweep across European countries, forcing residents to flee

The terror of flames spreads across the Old Continent as evacuations continue
Vast regions of the European continent are witnessing a fierce wave of wildfires that have broken out with unprecedented intensity, leaving behind thousands of hectares of green space turned to ash. Rescue and firefighting teams in several countries are struggling significantly to contain the flames, which are spreading due to weather conditions, necessitating large-scale evacuation operations to protect lives and property.
France and Belgium facing the flames
In southwestern France, specifically in the Landes region, the struggle continues against a massive fire that has been burning for several days. Its intensity surged in the early morning hours, consuming approximately 1,580 hectares of forest. This situation forced local authorities to evacuate the residents of 650 homes as a precautionary measure, even though the flames have not yet reached the houses themselves. In eastern Belgium, a devastating fire broke out in the “Hautes Fagnes” region near the German border, consuming nearly 1,600 hectares of vegetation. Intervention teams there are facing double the challenges due to the rugged terrain and the difficulty of reaching the active hotspots.
Grave human and material risks in the Balkans and Greece
In Serbia, around 300 firefighters are working desperately to control a huge fire that swept through the “Deliblatska Peščara” nature reserve, located near the capital, Belgrade, after destroying about 2,500 hectares. The situation is no better in Croatia, where a sudden fire threatens a number of homes on the island of “Dugi Otok,” while another fire in the “Omiš” region has resulted in tragic human losses, including one death and 40 injuries, 10 of which are described as serious. Meanwhile, Greek authorities are in a state of high alert to deal with more than 50 fires in a single day, with the most severe ones concentrated on the islands of Crete and Kos, near the Turkish border.
