Turin Municipality officially approves construction of a large Islamic complex with significant Moroccan funding

Official approval of the project in Turin
According to available data, the municipality of Turin, Italy, has officially approved a project to establish an integrated Islamic complex on the site of the historic, abandoned «Nebiolo» factory and foundry. The project is estimated to cost a total of approximately 17 million euros, in a move aimed at rehabilitating this unused industrial property.
Components and facilities of the expected Islamic complex
According to project details, the complex will feature a main prayer hall with a capacity of about one thousand worshippers, in addition to student housing providing approximately 90 beds. The design also includes a public library, study halls, and spaces dedicated to various cultural, artistic, and social activities serving the local community.
It should be noted that the cultural, educational, and social aspects will occupy the largest portion of the total area, with about 80 percent allocated to these purposes, while the remaining space will be directed exclusively for worship.
Moroccan funding and contribution of the Muslim community
In the same context, announced data indicate that Morocco will contribute an essential and central part to financing the completion of this project. This contribution is estimated at about 8 million euros, which will be provided through the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, alongside donations and financial contributions from members of the Muslim community residing in Italy, under the patronage of the «Italian Islamic Confederation».
Wide political and local debate in Italy
This decision has sparked a varied debate among various political and local parties in the city of Turin. While supporters of the project see it as a real opportunity to rehabilitate an abandoned industrial site and promote the values of social and cultural integration within the city, opponents express concerns regarding the urban and demographic impact on the area surrounding the site.
This controversy comes at a time when Italy is experiencing an ongoing debate regarding the presence of Islamic institutions and their effective role in framing integration and promoting positive dialogue within the social fabric.
