Urgent Warning from the Egyptian Drug Authority Regarding Lethal Medications

Official warnings regarding unlicensed weight-loss products

In a move aimed at protecting public health, the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) has issued strict warnings regarding the spread of advertisements promoting weight-loss products that contain active medical substances without obtaining the necessary licenses. This action follows the Authority’s monitoring of organized promotional operations targeting consumers via social media platforms and public medical events.

Monitoring of advertising violations during August

The Authority revealed that, during its continuous monitoring operations, it detected advertisements promoting preparations containing substances such as tirzepatide, semaglutide, and retatrutide. One of the most prominent cases observed was the promotion of a product under the brand name “Vuture” during a medical conference held on August 7, where advertising banners and online offers promoting these substances were spotted without official authorization.

The violations were not limited to conferences but extended to social media platforms; on August 9, the Authority detected two promotional videos for the product “Retatrutide” via accounts on Instagram, which prompted the Authority to take immediate regulatory measures against these practices that mislead consumers.

Important guidelines for consumers on medication safety

The Drug Authority emphasized the necessity of not being swayed by anonymous advertisements that flood the digital space, confirming that purchasing medications or weight-loss products from unofficial sources puts users’ lives at risk. The Authority clarified that the monitoring lists and publications it issues reflect its regulatory stance based on findings at the time of publication, urging citizens to verify the registration of any pharmaceutical product with the Authority before using it.

Communication channels to report violations

As part of its efforts to enhance community oversight, the Authority urged citizens to participate positively and report any illegal advertisements or products of unknown origin. Citizens can contact the hotline 15301 or use the official website of the Authority, in addition to using the QR code scanning service available in official publications.

The Authority confirmed that all reports and information received are treated with complete confidentiality, in accordance with the laws and regulations in force in the country, stressing that the ultimate goal is to ensure the availability of safe and effective medication for the Egyptian patient, away from false commercial claims.
