Union tensions cast a shadow over the university start in Morocco

A university season beginning on thin ice

The university system in Morocco is experiencing, with the start of the new academic season, a state of anticipation and caution due to the resurgence of union tensions. This unrest comes at a time when university institutions are suffering from an accumulation of unresolved demands, leading union actors to adopt differing escalatory positions.

Union disagreements over protest methods

Observers of the university scene note a divide in perspectives among various union bodies regarding the best way to manage the dispute with the Ministry of Higher Education. While some organizations adopt an approach of open dialogue, others have chosen the option of field-based escalation as a means of pressure on the overseeing ministry to meet the workers’ demands.

Calls for boycott and potential paralysis

In a notable escalation, the National Union for Employees of the Ministry of Higher Education and University Residences, affiliated with the Democratic Confederation of Labor, has called for a boycott of the university start. This call includes all university institutions across the Kingdom, in addition to the ministry’s central administration, which threatens the continuity of administrative and educational work during the first days of the academic season.

The unions are demanding an acceleration in opening a serious and responsible dialogue regarding the pending issues. They believe that the “deaf ear” policy pursued by the concerned authorities will only exacerbate the situation, and are calling for improved working conditions and the fulfillment of the legitimate rights of employees to ensure the stability of the public university facility.
