Tensions and political debate at Casablanca City Council over real estate and stalled projects

Political tension at the Casablanca City Council session

The proceedings of the extraordinary session of the Casablanca City Council, held this Monday morning, were marked by a charged atmosphere and an exchange of accusations among council members. A heated debate erupted between Karim Glaibi, a council member representing the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and another member representing the National Rally of Independents (RNI), regarding what was described as the “politicization of files” brought up for discussion.

Background of the dispute: The socio-space file

The spark for the disagreement began when Karim Glaibi demanded precise clarifications regarding the fate of the “socio-space” creation project, confirming that this project had already been discussed with local authorities, only to be met with responses stating that the land designated for the project was not part of the commune’s property, raising doubts about the management of this file.

In contrast, the RNI representative considered that the council chamber is not a venue for political maneuvering, stressing the need to limit the discussion to issues that affect the concerns of Casablanca’s citizens, away from partisan conflicts.

Glaibi clarifies: No politicization, the goal is the interest of the economic capital

In an exclusive statement, Karim Glaibi emphasized that what was raised during the session has nothing to do with politicization, but is rather a search for solutions to a problem that has persisted for more than two years. The speaker pointed to data confirming the availability of an 8-hectare plot of land belonging to the commune, which could be utilized to establish vital facilities that the population desperately needs, especially in areas suffering from severe shortages in basic infrastructure like Aïn Sebaâ and Hay Mohammadi.

Glaibi called on the Mayor of Casablanca, Nabila Rmili, to intervene urgently to settle the legal status of the land plots belonging to the commune. He explained that the goal of this move is to break the deadlock on development projects that have remained stalled for years due to property problems or the absence of land, affirming that the PAM team seeks to provide constructive proposals that serve the residents and push forward the city’s development wheel.

In conclusion, the issue of communal real estate remains the most controversial point in Casablanca, as councilors demand radical solutions to end the “blockage” that hinders the implementation of major development projects in the Kingdom’s economic capital.
