A Green Invasion: How the UAE became the 7th largest importer of Chinese cars globally in 2026

Chinese brands continue to assert their dominance within the UAE market in 2026, successfully transforming the country into a pivotal hub and a major global destination for receiving passenger car exports from the Asian giant. This presence not only satisfies rising local demand but also extends to bolster the UAE’s status as a strategic regional center for re-exporting these vehicles to various markets across the Middle East and the African continent.
The UAE ranks 7th globally with notable outperformance
The latest data from the «GASGO» Automotive Research Institute shows that the UAE has secured an advanced position, ranking seventh globally among the largest importers of Chinese passenger cars. During the period from January to May 2026, the import volume reached 119,179 vehicles, surpassing prominent and competitive international markets such as Spain, Mexico, and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Brazil leads the global scene with a total of 372,199 vehicles, followed by Russia in second place with 350,641 vehicles, followed by the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, and Italy, before the UAE deservedly takes the seventh spot.
A historic leap in the new energy vehicle sector
New energy vehicles, consisting of electric and hybrid cars, have played a crucial and prominent role as a key driver for this export growth. Imports in this category reached 53,135 vehicles during the first five months of the year, enabling the UAE to rank tenth globally in this future-oriented sector.
These imports witnessed a qualitative leap and a massive annual growth of 45.7%, accounting for nearly 44.6% of the total Chinese passenger cars imported into the country during the same period.
Advanced infrastructure and fierce competition in the local market
This growing interest in Chinese electric and hybrid models is supported by several fundamental factors, most notably the rapid and continuous development of the country’s charging station infrastructure, along with the diversity of options and innovative designs offered by Chinese companies, as well as their high competitiveness in terms of price and advanced technical specifications.
Efforts did not stop there; major Chinese car manufacturers have been keen to solidify their presence by launching modern brands and expanding dealer networks and maintenance service centers, sparking unprecedented competition within the local automotive market.
The 2026 indicators clearly confirm that the UAE market has become a fundamental pillar for the Chinese automotive industry and an ideal gateway for regional expansion, driven by the rapid shift toward sustainable transport and the rising share of eco-friendly vehicles.
