Decisive diplomatic shift: Colombia reaffirms Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and freezes recognition of the phantom entity

Sovereign review and total break with the alleged entity

In a move crowning the continuous successes of Moroccan diplomacy, the Republic of Colombia has renewed its official confirmation of its explicit recognition of the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire national territory, including the southern provinces, while announcing the complete freezing of its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi republic.

A statement by the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that this new position follows a comprehensive “sovereign review” of the decision taken by the previous government. Bogota clarified that this orientation takes into account that this separatist entity “is not recognized by the United Nations as a member state”, and is part of a firm desire to strengthen the strategic partnership between Colombia and the Kingdom of Morocco.

Respect for international law and support at the Security Council

The Colombian Foreign Ministry highlighted that freezing recognition clearly means that “there will be no political or diplomatic contact, no exchange of missions, nor any support for the alleged entity” in various international forums, led by the UN and the Security Council, where Colombia is currently a non-permanent member.

Bogota emphasized that this historic step reflects full respect for international law and the UN Charter, and aligns with the international framework established by Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) regarding the artificial regional conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.

Strategic vision and promising partnership prospects

This dynamic reflects Colombia’s sincere will to revitalize its historical relations with Morocco, a key partner for nearly half a century. Both countries are looking forward to a qualitative leap in areas including trade, bilateral investments, tourism, food security, and port and logistics infrastructure.

Crowning of Royal diplomacy efforts

This tangible shift follows the official visit of the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, to Cali, where he represented His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella. The decision translates the shared will of both leaders to open a new and bright page in the history of Moroccan-Colombian relations.
