Diphtheria Outbreak in Morocco: Health Ministry on Alert After Two Child Deaths

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced on Monday that two limited family clusters of diphtheria have been detected in the Souss-Massa region, as part of the national epidemiological surveillance system.
Epidemiological Status and Deaths
The Ministry confirmed one laboratory-tested case, while eight others are under investigation. Regrettably, two deaths have been recorded among the cases under investigation. Preliminary data indicate that the children involved had not received prior vaccination or had failed to complete their recommended vaccine doses.
Rapid Response in Souss-Massa
Rapid response teams have been deployed to conduct field investigations, identify close contacts, and provide preventive antibiotic treatment. Catch-up vaccination campaigns for targeted groups have also been initiated.
What is Diphtheria?
Diphtheria is a highly dangerous bacterial disease transmitted primarily through respiratory droplets. The Ministry emphasizes that vaccination is the only primary shield for preventing the spread of the disease.
Urgent Appeal to Families
The Ministry has issued an urgent call to citizens to exercise caution, seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear, and verify their children’s vaccination status. It also warned against misinformation that contributes to the resurgence of preventable diseases.
