Road Bleeding in Algeria: Traffic Accidents Expose Infrastructure Crisis and Lack of Development

For many years, Algerian roads have been witnessing a continuous bleeding that does not stop or heal, as traffic accidents have turned into daily tragedies claiming dozens of lives and leaving thousands injured with permanent disabilities. Faced with this harsh human reality, the matter goes beyond mere fate and destiny to become a matter of public opinion closely tied to the effectiveness of public policies in protecting citizens’ lives and ensuring their safety on the roads.

Deterioration of Infrastructure and Dilapidated Transport

The alarming rise in traffic accident rates cannot be separated under any circumstances from the current state of deteriorating road networks and public transport systems. Many vital road axes suffer from continuous degradation and a lack of regular maintenance, increasing the risks of traffic accidents and turning daily travel into a deadly journey fraught with risks and chronic injuries. With large sectors of public transport and freight continuing to rely on dilapidated vehicles that have far exceeded their operational lifespan, the direct threat to citizens’ safety doubles amidst slow renewal procedures and rampant corruption in the sector.

Lack of Oversight and Financial Priority Direction

Furthermore, weak oversight and maintenance, along with the absence of strict mechanisms to inspect the safety of large vehicles and secure roads, double the heavy human and economic losses annually. Recent developments have sparked a wide and heated debate in popular and media circles regarding how national priorities are set and financial resources are directed, as well as the value of an ordinary citizen’s life amid this development chaos. At a time when vital sectors such as transport, health, education, and infrastructure suffer from severe shortages in structural investments, sharp criticism is directed at allocating huge financial grants and gifts to external entities, when the ordinary citizen was most deserving of them.

The Need for Urgent Action and Citizen Protection

Protecting citizens’ lives and providing safe, comfortable infrastructure remains the fundamental commitment of any development administration truly seeking the welfare of its people, as true stability and safety begin with addressing worsening internal crises before any other file that does not serve the people’s interest or protect their basic rights. It is no longer enough to settle for traditional statements of condolences and sympathy following every painful incident to absorb public anger or address the root of the real problem.

The current challenge undoubtedly requires formulating an urgent and comprehensive national plan to rehabilitate all deteriorating roads, alongside launching a national program to renew transport buses and vehicles, while providing facilities and direct investments to modernize the dilapidated transport fleet. Reforming the transport sector and securing roads is not merely an extra luxury, but rather the primary benchmark of the state’s seriousness in protecting its most valuable asset: the safety and security of its citizens.
