UN Security Council to hold technical and political meetings in October on the Sahara conflict

Intense diplomatic agenda for the UN Security Council in October

The UN Security Council has announced the scheduling of three key sessions throughout October, aimed at discussing developments related to the Sahara conflict and considering the extension of the mandate for the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara “MINURSO”, under the rotating presidency of Greece.

Secretary-General’s report and technical/political consultations

The UN body begins its monthly agenda by receiving the detailed periodic report from the UN Secretary-General, which carefully tracks field developments and the challenges faced by MINURSO on the ground. On October 7, the Council will hold a technical meeting with troop-contributing countries to review safety and security conditions and logistical mechanisms. This will be followed on October 8 by a closed-door political consultation, where the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, will provide a comprehensive briefing on his recent moves to revive the political process.

Expected public session to vote on the UN resolution

These meetings will conclude with a decisive public session scheduled for October 30, dedicated to voting on and adopting the new UN resolution before the mission’s mandate expires at the end of the month. These developments occur amidst ongoing international attention to the Sahara conflict and efforts aimed at reaching a realistic and lasting political solution.
