Drug shipment bearing Gaddafi’s face invades Libyan ports from Europe

Drug shipment bearing “Gaddafi’s face” seized in Tripoli

In a high-profile security operation, Libyan authorities have announced the seizure of a massive shipment of narcotics, sparking widespread controversy due to their external design which bore the features of Muammar Gaddafi. The pills were discovered during a meticulous inspection conducted by security services in Tripoli following precise intelligence tracking.

Details of the security operation

The Deterrence Apparatus for Combating Terrorism and Organized Crime, affiliated with the Presidential Council, confirmed it had received intelligence indicating that a criminal gang was planning to smuggle a shipment of illicit materials into Libya from a European country. Based on this information, the investigation unit tracked the shipment from its arrival at a Libyan port until it was seized.

The security statement noted that the narcotics, totaling approximately 100,000 pills, were tightly concealed inside a “Renault Master” cargo vehicle. Security agencies pointed out that the pills bore distinctive engravings of Gaddafi’s face and shoulders, reflecting a strange visual identity for this smuggled cargo.

Libya as a regional smuggling hub

This seizure comes at a time when reports by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime warned last January that Libya is turning into a major regional hub for the transit of synthetic drugs. The report emphasized that international gangs are exploiting the security instability and political division that the country has been experiencing since 2011 to expand their activities.

It is noteworthy that Libya still suffers from a division of power between the Government of National Unity in the west and the authorities controlling the east and south of the country. Analysts view this complex field situation as a facilitating factor that allows organized crime networks to conduct their operations through Libyan borders and ports by taking advantage of overlapping security jurisdictions.

The Libyan authorities have referred the suspects to the Public Prosecution to complete legal investigations, without disclosing the identity of the European country from which the shipment originated or the Libyan port that received it, in line with the confidentiality of the ongoing investigations.
