Financial scandal topples officials of a social welfare association for journalists

Decisive judicial developments in the embezzlement case of the journalists’ social welfare association
In a notable judicial move, the treasurer of a social welfare association for journalists was arrested this week following an appellate ruling that sentenced him to two years in prison, one of which is to be served effectively. This action comes after the Court of Cassation rejected the appeal filed by the official, who is a state engineer by profession. He was taken from his home in Salé to Tamesna Prison to begin serving his sentence.
Background of the case: General Inspectorate report brings down officials
The case stems from precise investigations conducted by the General Inspectorate of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, whose “black” report revealed serious legal violations in the management of the association’s funds. The report showed that massive sums of money, estimated in the hundreds of millions of centimes, were spent illegally, covering the acquisition of a fleet of vehicles, domestic and international travel expenses, as well as grants for Umrah and vacations, all handled in violation of established legal procedures and controls.
Ongoing search for the association president and criminal investigations
Based on these findings, the Public Prosecution initiated legal proceedings, tasking the National Bureau for Combating Economic and Financial Crimes of the National Brigade of the Judicial Police in Casablanca with investigating the irregularities. In light of the investigation’s results, the treasurer and the association’s president were prosecuted on heavy charges related to embezzlement and squandering of public funds, in addition to forgery of administrative documents.
While the sentence against the treasurer has been executed, security services are intensifying their efforts to locate the association’s president, who faces a similar sentence and remains a fugitive until he is apprehended to face justice.
