Vivas takes the Ceuta migration crisis to the European Union

Diplomatic moves by the President of Ceuta toward Brussels
In a step reflecting the magnitude of the pressures facing the occupied city of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, the city’s government president, announced his intention to travel to Brussels on September 8th. This visit comes in the context of the Spanish official’s efforts to brief decision-makers in the European Union on the delicate security and social situation in the city, following the intense waves of irregular migration witnessed on July 30th and 31st.
Unaccompanied minors file at the heart of the talks
Despite the secrecy surrounding the visit’s agenda, reports indicate that the issue of unaccompanied minors will be the focal point of Vivas’ discussions with European Commission and European Parliament officials. The president of Ceuta, who belongs to the right-wing, adopts strict positions calling for the need to return minors to their countries of origin, a trend that finds resonance in some European circles.
Morocco’s stance and coordination challenges
This visit comes at a time when Morocco has shown a clear readiness to cooperate regarding the reception of Moroccan minors exclusively, provided their identity is verified, which places the migration file in Ceuta before new parameters. The Brussels meetings are expected to be an opportunity for Vivas to request material and political support from the European Union, in an attempt to contain the ongoing repercussions left by the recent mass crossing attempts and their effects on the stability of the occupied city.
