Regional alert in Sefrou following locust swarms: Urgent measures to contain the threat

Local authorities in Sefrou province were placed on high alert last Friday following the appearance of locust swarms in the rural commune of Adrej. These proactive measures aim to contain any potential spread of these harmful insects and prevent damage to the region’s vegetation and agricultural areas.
According to sources on the ground, a mixed committee was formed, including representatives from local authorities, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, the National Agency for Water and Forests, as well as the Royal Gendarmerie and Auxiliary Forces. This committee assessed the situation on-site and took the necessary operational decisions to immediately tackle the pest.
Danger of the swarms and targeted vegetation
It is worth noting that the danger of these insects lies in their high destructive capacity to rapidly wipe out vegetation and crops, posing a direct threat to the agricultural season and the daily livelihoods of local farmers and herders. This has necessitated a full-scale mobilization to block any large-scale proliferation within the province.
Spread of the phenomenon and containment efforts
This alert comes in a context similar to what has been observed in several regions in the south and southeast of the Kingdom recently, where sporadic swarms of locusts were recorded. However, proactive and rapid interventions by specialized teams have successfully contained the situation.
Preliminary estimates suggest that these insect swarms may have arrived from active breeding grounds in Mauritania, taking advantage of climate changes and wind currents, which requires constant vigilance and close monitoring of borders and pastoral areas throughout the country.
