Historic Shift in Bogota: Colombia Recognizes Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Its Sahara

The national cause of the Kingdom of Morocco witnessed a pivotal diplomatic shift in Latin America, following the official announcement by the Republic of Colombia of a change in its position regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, affirming its explicit and full recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over all its southern provinces, and turning the page on its recognition of the pseudo-entity.

Diplomatic Turning Point and Explicit Reaffirmation of Moroccan Sovereignty

This historic announcement came during high-level talks held in the Colombian city of Cali between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the Vice President of the Republic of Colombia, José Manuel Restrepo, in the presence of Foreign Minister Omar Paula Escobar.

In this context, the head of Colombian diplomacy emphasized that his country now officially and clearly recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, stressing that this orientation establishes a new phase in the Colombian position and supports the Kingdom’s legitimate efforts.

Towards a Strategic Partnership and Economic Integration Between the Two Continents

For his part, the Colombian Vice President highlighted that this decision embodies a “new beginning” in the course of bilateral relations, stressing that the Kingdom of Morocco is Colombia’s primary and most suitable ally on the African continent, while expressing his country’s sincere desire to lay the foundations of a solid strategic partnership with Rabat.

In response to this step, Nasser Bourita described Colombia’s decision as “historic and courageous”, highlighting that ending the recognition of the “fictitious republic” and decisively affirming Moroccan sovereignty will give a strong boost to economic and political diplomacy between the two countries. He added that the distinguished geographical location of both countries qualifies them to form an economic bridge and a vital link between Latin American regions and African markets.

A Wise Royal Vision to Enhance South-South Cooperation

The participation of the Moroccan delegation in the inauguration ceremony of the new Colombian President, Abelardo de la Espriella, comes under the high directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, confirming Morocco’s continuous keenness to accompany this positive momentum and elevate Moroccan-Colombian relations to broader horizons that serve the strategic interests of both parties.
