Meknes launches massive project to modernize wastewater treatment

A qualitative leap in water resource management in Meknes

In a strategic move aimed at addressing water stress and maximizing available resources, the city of Meknes intends to launch a comprehensive project for the rehabilitation and modernization of its wastewater treatment plant. The project, with a massive budget of approximately 211 million dirhams, aims to transform the station from a mere liquid waste disposal facility into an advanced center for producing reusable treated water.

Project details and strategic objectives

The Governor of Meknes Prefecture, Abdelghani Sebbar, announced the project’s outlines during an official meeting, emphasizing that the initiative is part of national goals to modernize water infrastructure. The Regional Multiservice Company (SRM) will oversee the execution of the works, which primarily aim to increase the plant’s capacity to 48,000 cubic meters per day, with the creation of a new unit based on activated sludge technology.

Advanced technologies and tertiary treatment

The project managers are committed to adopting advanced tertiary treatment, which includes precise stages for removing organic matter and disinfecting the water. This system ensures that the resulting water meets the highest health and environmental standards, paving the way for its use in irrigating green spaces and public parks, and even for certain agricultural applications, which will alleviate the significant pressure on groundwater and drinking water sources.

Intelligent monitoring system and sustainable management

The project will not be limited to the technical side of treatment; it will include the creation of a central control room and automated systems for precise management over five years. Modern sludge drying mechanisms will also be adopted, enhancing the plant’s efficiency and supporting its environmental sustainability. This approach enshrines the concept of the “circular economy” in the water sector by treating wastewater as a vital resource rather than an environmental burden.

Promising outlook for the city’s water security

This initiative serves as an exemplary model of water resource management at the regional level, which authorities are counting on to boost sustainable development in the city of Meknes. While awaiting the final schedule for the start of the works, this project represents a decisive step toward securing the city’s water needs for non-domestic activities and ensuring the protection of local ecosystems in the face of current climate change.
