Spain uses tents to accommodate 1500 migrants in Ceuta

Spanish move to contain massive migrant influx in Ceuta

In a move aimed at containing the growing humanitarian and security crisis in the city of Ceuta, Spanish authorities have announced the start of setting up temporary tents to house about 1,500 migrants who have reached the city in the past few days. This decision was made as an emergency solution to alleviate the stifling pressure on local reception centers since the events that occurred at the border at the end of last July.

Details of the government plan and shelter locations

The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration explained, after a meeting with the city’s president, that these tents will be distributed in various strategic locations within the city. The primary goal is to clear the beaches and open spaces where migrants are currently gathering and to provide minimum housing conditions. Proposed locations include a military base, an old flour mill, a football stadium, warehouses in the “Tarajal” area, and parts of the port.

Public concerns and deportation challenges

Despite official assurances that these measures remain temporary, the public in Ceuta is expressing great concern about the possibility of them turning into a long-term solution, especially given the delays in processing international protection applications. Data reveals that most of those currently present are from Sudan, Mali, and Algeria, in addition to other sub-Saharan nationalities who followed long routes to reach northern Morocco.

For his part, the city’s president has demanded stricter security surveillance at the entrances, while calling for the activation of deportation procedures for migrants who do not meet the legal requirements for asylum. These developments come at a time when the Spanish Supreme Court has previously criticized the lack of government coordination and the shortage of resources allocated for receiving protection seekers, emphasizing the need to improve processing and management conditions for this sensitive issue.
