Terrifying Ebola outbreak in Congo: Urgent UN warnings

Alarm bells ringing: Ebola sweeping through Congo at unprecedented pace

The United Nations and the World Health Organization have issued severe warnings regarding the dangerous acceleration of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This comes as the infection footprint expands and the death toll rises alarmingly, making it urgent to intensify international efforts to contain the epidemic and prevent it from spiraling out of control.

Concerning figures and official statements confirm the severity

In this context, Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, confirmed that the virus is claiming lives at a rate of one person every 30 minutes. Fletcher described this outbreak as the fastest-spreading one ever, stressing the importance of redoubling international action before the situation worsens and the infection spreads further.

For its part, the World Health Organization explained that the strain caused by the «Bundibugyo» virus now represents the largest in the country’s history and is expanding faster than previous waves. The epidemic has reached 54 health zones across six provinces, after initially being confined to the Mongbwalu area in Ituri province.

Heavy toll and calls for intensified humanitarian response

The latest data released by the DRC’s Ministry of Communication and Media show that the death toll from the virus has reached 2,214, while total infections have reached approximately 4,727 cases, recording a high mortality rate of about 46.8 percent of confirmed cases.

In conclusion, international and UN bodies have called for strengthening the health and humanitarian response system, focusing on intensifying surveillance, isolation, and treatment, as well as providing necessary support to affected local communities to ensure the epidemic is contained as soon as possible.
