Motsepe: Africa Cup of Nations to return to biennial format soon

CAF reviews return to two-year system
According to media reports relayed by the South African channel SABC Sport, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is seriously considering a proposal to return to holding the Africa Cup of Nations every two years, instead of the current four-year cycle.
In this context, the president of the continental football governing body, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed that this proposal is currently under continuous and intense discussion within the executive committee, a move that could reshape the African competition calendar in the near future based on new data and ongoing assessments.
Decision finalized for “AFCON 2027” host
Meanwhile, the CAF president put an end to any potential speculation regarding the hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, highlighting that the decision has been finalized in favor of East African nations.
Patrice Motsepe explained in his media statements that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda represent both the primary and alternative options (Plans A, B, and C) to organize this continental football celebration, emphasizing that there are no other options on the table for the 2027 edition other than these three countries.
