How Pedro Sánchez’s decision crushed the Algerian regime’s dreams of granting Spanish citizenship to Sahrawis

In another severe blow to the illusory diplomacy of the El Mouradia Palace and the Polisario Front, the long-held dreams regarding a proposal to grant Spanish citizenship to a group of Sahrawis have evaporated. The surprise decision by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to dissolve Parliament and call for early legislative elections on November 29 has put an end to this legislative path, in which Algeria had invested significant political stakes.
The resounding failure of the “Sumar” initiative under the weight of political crisis
The legislative proposal, introduced by the “Sumar” group and approved by the Congress of Deputies on September 10 with 168 votes, did not survive the harsh political reality in Spain. The text, which aimed to exceptionally grant Spanish citizenship to Sahrawis born in the region during the period of Spanish administration before September 29, 1977, remained trapped in parliamentary drawers and never reached the Senate.
Official Senate data show that the initiative was still awaiting presentation in a plenary session, which contradicts the claims of the media mouthpieces of the Algerian regime regarding an imminent entry into force of the law. The political crisis surrounding the Sánchez government accelerated the decision to dissolve Parliament, resetting all pending matters to square one.
New disappointment at the El Mouradia Palace
With the announcement of the end of the parliamentary term, all initiatives that had not completed their mandatory constitutional path were automatically halted, effectively ending this legal gamble. Thus, the Algerian regime and its protégé, the Polisario Front, found themselves facing the bitter truth that their “illusory gains” were nothing more than ink on paper within a parliament that had lost its mandate.
The fall of this proposal is a stinging slap to the strategy in which Algeria invested massive funds and propaganda. The future of any attempt to revive this file will depend on the new political map resulting from the upcoming elections, far from the delusions of the El Mouradia Palace, which have crumbled against the strength of the Spanish constitutional reality.
