Ghana refutes Polisario narrative and renews support for Moroccan Sahara

Official rebuttal of Polisario claims by the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ended the controversy that media outlets affiliated with the separatist Polisario Front attempted to stir following the reception of a front representative by Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Accra categorically confirmed that this meeting did not exceed the status of an “envoy,” denying any diplomatic recognition or “ambassadorial” status as promoted by the separatist media machine in its attempt to break free from international isolation.

Moroccan sovereignty remains a firm pillar of the Ghanaian position

The Ghanaian Foreign Ministry emphasized that its sovereign decision issued on January 6, 2025, to withdraw recognition of the fictitious entity, remains valid and effective without any reversal. Accra clarified that receiving the envoy does not alter its firm stance regarding Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, noting that this step is purely protocol-related and carries no political implications in support of the separatist agenda.

International support for the Autonomy Initiative

Ghana reiterated its explicit support for the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, declaring its absolute backing for UN efforts to find a peaceful and practical solution to the conflict. Accra emphasized that any negotiation process must be based exclusively on the Autonomy Initiative presented by the Kingdom of Morocco, as the optimal and realistic option for ending this regional conflict within the framework of respect for national sovereignty.

Moroccan-Ghanaian relations at their peak

This position puts an end to attempts to disrupt the remarkable development of relations between Rabat and Accra. These relations are of vital importance, especially following the strengthening of communication channels between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ghanaian counterpart. The bilateral partnership transcends the political dimension to include broad economic cooperation in investment, energy, and infrastructure, reflecting a common direction to build a pragmatic partnership that leverages both countries’ strategic assets within the African continent.
