Algeria’s Scorching Summer Ignites Poultry Prices and Strains Middle-Class Budgets

Rising Poultry Prices Burden the Algerian Citizen

Algerian markets are currently experiencing sharp fluctuations in the prices of white meat. The surge in poultry prices has sparked consumer frustration, putting the purchasing power of Algerian families to a difficult test amidst ongoing challenges in the livestock production sector.

Breeders Identify Causes of the Crisis

Attempting to explain the price hike, the head of the Algerian Poultry Breeders Federation attributed these developments to a set of technical and climatic factors. He pointed out that the record-breaking heatwaves this summer, along with fires and epidemics, contributed directly to the death of large numbers of poultry. Furthermore, frequent power outages have rendered many poultry farms unsuitable, leading to a noticeable decline in production.

Regulatory and Bureaucratic Obstacles

In addition to natural challenges, the breeders’ representative pointed to structural obstacles regarding delays in import measures, which negatively affected the availability of essential veterinary medicines and vaccines. According to the same source, these conditions led some breeders to abandon their activity due to the financial losses incurred during previous production cycles.

Expectations for Crisis Relief in the Near Term

Despite the severity of the price hikes, the Algerian Poultry Breeders Federation offered reassurances to consumers, expecting a price decrease of 30 to 40 dinars by the end of September and October. The spokesperson explained that this expected decline relies primarily on the entry of new batches of chicks into the production cycle, which will contribute to boosting supply in markets and meeting local demand.

Analytical Perspective: The Need for Structural Solutions

Despite these reassurances, observers believe that strategic solutions remain necessary to overcome recurring food abundance crises. Key demands include the need for investment in modern refrigeration equipment and securing the supply chain for veterinary vaccines to ensure production stability, free from weather volatility or administrative disruptions, thereby protecting the citizen’s purchasing power from sudden price shocks.
