Morocco and Israel agree to exchange ambassadors and develop economic partnership by 2026

Diplomatic move to upgrade representation between Rabat and Tel Aviv

In a step reflecting the deepening of the bilateral partnership, the concerned parties announced an agreement between Morocco and Israel to elevate the level of diplomatic representation between the two countries to the level of exchanging ambassadors. This announcement followed a high-level trilateral meeting held in New York on Wednesday, attended by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz.

Trilateral commitment to enhance strategic cooperation

According to the statement issued by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, this meeting took place at the invitation of the American side, with the three countries reaffirming their joint commitment to taking concrete measures to strengthen relations. Chief among these measures is the transformation of the current diplomatic missions into official embassies, along with initiating the process of appointing ambassadors, marking a qualitative shift in the nature of existing relations.

Ambitious economic and commercial projects

Beyond the diplomatic front, the meeting focused on economic dimensions as a fundamental pillar for developing bilateral relations. In this context, both the Moroccan and Israeli sides agreed to finalize two key agreements by the end of 2026: the first concerns the protection of investments, while the second relates to the prevention of double taxation. These steps are expected to help create an attractive investment climate and facilitate trade between the two countries.

Expansion of air links and mutual visits

In the framework of enhancing communication between the two peoples, it was decided to expand air travel to include Moroccan airlines, with a timeline for implementation set by the end of 2026. The meeting also concluded on the need to intensify coordination through the exchange of high-level official visits in the coming months, reflecting the desire of both parties to provide a strong and sustainable boost to various aspects of bilateral cooperation.
