Intense diplomatic moves between Morocco and Russia ahead of Security Council discussions on the Sahara file

Deepening political dialogue between Rabat and Moscow
In a move aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership, the Russian capital, Moscow, hosted last Tuesday the first meeting of the joint working committee between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Russian Federation. The meeting was co-chaired by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Borisenko and the Director General of International Political Affairs at the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fouad Yazourh.
Integrated economic and political agenda
According to the statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on exploring ways to develop multifaceted cooperation between the two countries, with a special emphasis on increasing trade levels and consolidating human ties. Both parties also stressed the importance of activating the role of the joint intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific, and technical cooperation to ensure the sustainability of the partnership between Rabat and Moscow.
Alignment of views on regional and international issues
On the diplomatic level, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the existence of a convergence and alignment of views between the two countries regarding most files on the global and regional agenda. Both sides expressed their mutual interest in intensifying coordination at both bilateral and multilateral levels, especially regarding the resolution of crises in the Middle East and Africa, emphasizing the need to rely on political and diplomatic means, international law, and the central role of the United Nations.
Delicate diplomatic context ahead of the Guterres report
This diplomatic move comes at a strategically significant time, coinciding with ongoing preparations for the presentation of the annual report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the Sahara file, in addition to the expected discussions in the UN Security Council next October. Observers view this meeting as a step toward maintaining the momentum of the political dialogue between the two countries, based on the spirit and text of the declaration on deepening the strategic partnership signed between the two parties on March 15, 2016.
