Public schools, victims of reckless electoral campaigns

The sanctity of educational institutions in the face of candidate ambitions

With every electoral cycle, our educational institutions become vital hubs for polling stations. While we take pride in the public school as a pillar of democracy, it is disheartening to see the “assault” on these institutions’ walls and fences by some electoral campaigns, which do not hesitate to cover up artistic murals with chaotic markings and paint, lacking any sense of aesthetic value.

A direct assault on the educational space

Any observer of electoral campaigns will note the unjustified exploitation of school facades. Instead of adopting modern and civilized methods to promote electoral programs, some resort to defacing walls with electoral symbols and numbers. This behavior reflects not only a lack of aesthetic sense but also constitutes a physical attack on public facilities that have received significant budgets to provide an attractive environment for students and staff.

Legal responsibility and ethical duty

It is regrettable that some candidates, who are responsible for improving educational infrastructure under Framework Law 17-51, are the first to contribute to the deterioration of these facilities. Article 36 of Organic Law No. 59.11, concerning the election of territorial council members, is explicit: it obliges list representatives to restore the sites to their original condition within 15 days of the campaign’s end—a rule widely ignored by those who only seek votes without adhering to the basic rules of citizenship.

A call for elevated political action and school protection

We urge political actors to abide by Article 6 of the Framework Law, which mandates that territorial entities actively contribute to educational reform rather than hindering it by disfiguring its facilities. The protection of educational institutions is not the responsibility of the administration alone; it is a national contract that binds us all. Instead of writing on walls, candidates can innovate with dedicated boards to preserve the beauty of the school that will welcome our children after the election ends.

In conclusion, the schools that grant you political legitimacy through the ballot box deserve respect and protection, not vandalism. Let us all take responsibility for preserving this national educational heritage.
