Details of Nabil Ahamjik’s hunger strike at Tangier 2 Prison

Background of Nabil Ahamjik’s hunger strike at Tangier 2 Prison

The family of Nabil Ahamjik, one of the most prominent figures among the “Hirak Rif” detainees, has broken their silence to clarify the real reasons that led their son to start an open-ended hunger strike inside the Tangier 2 local prison. This media statement came in response to the report issued by the prison administration. The family emphasized that this escalating step is not about special privileges, but rather a protest cry against what they described as the “obstruction of his academic path.”

Academic demands, not prison privileges

Ahamjik’s family stressed that preparing a doctoral thesis requires special conditions for concentration and research, which are currently absent in his detention conditions. They pointed out that the prison administration’s proposals, including assigning him an individual cell, do not meet the actual needs of academic research. Instead, they called for the use of vacant rooms in the infirmary wing that have remained unused since 2020, asserting that they could provide a more suitable environment for scientific work.

Refusal of transfer and demand for dialogue

Regarding the proposal to transfer him to a prison institution near Rabat, the family announced their rejection, arguing that it would double the suffering of the detainee and his family traveling from Al Hoceima, and would further complicate his academic situation. The family reaffirmed that the main demand is the creation of a practical formula that guarantees him the ability to continue his scientific research in human and legal conditions consistent with applicable standards.

Warnings about deteriorating health

Concluding their clarifications, the family directed an explicit call to the Tangier 2 Prison administration and the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration to open channels of direct dialogue with Nabil Ahamjik to listen to his demands. They held the relevant authorities fully responsible for his physical safety and health in light of the ongoing hunger strike and the serious health complications that may follow.
